Harry Lutgens was a newspaper executive and entrepreneur. Born in 1893 in San Francisco, he grew up in San Francisco and Sonoma. Lutgens created the Sonoma Valley Forum, a four-page weekly that carried local news, weddings, births, and deaths. From 1922 to 1948, Lutgens was the executive secreatry of the California Press Association. Additionally, he was the secretary of Friend W. Richardson for Governor campaign’s San Francisco headquarters during the 1922 election. In 1926, Lutgens bought the San Rafael Independent, which openly supported the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. From 1930 to 1938, Lutgens served on the board governing the Golden Gate Bridge District. In this interview, he discusses advertising and publishing, the campaign and administration of Governor Richardson, Marin County’s regional planning, and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.
