Full title: The "Monterey." Among the new double-turreted monitors this vessel ranks first in speed and second in point of size and armament. She has engines of 5,244 indicated horse-power, enabling her to steam 13.6 knots an hour, and her dimensions -- length, 256 ft., breadth, 59 ft., mean draft 14.8 ft. -- give a displacement of 4,084 tons. The forward turret is armed with two 12-inch rifles, and the after one mounts two of 10-inch calibre. Twelve rapid-fire guns of smaller caliber constitute the secondary battery. The thickness of the armor on the sides, turrets and barbettes varies from 6 to 13, 7 ½ to 8, 11 ½ to 13 inches respectively. The "Monterey"'s construction began in 1889 and cost $3,628,950. Her present crew numbers 19 officers and 172 men.
