Description

The annex at right, the Mary Frances Searles Art Gallery, was completed in 1900. On the front steps, Douglas Tilden's statue "The Football Players" is visible, which was installed on the Berkeley campus in May 1900. If the statue pictured is the original bronze and not a cast, a narrow date in early 1900 is suggested. The presence of the bronze "in the portico" of the Art Institute in Jan. 1899 was noted in The Examiner (1889-1902); [San Francisco, California]. 26 Jan 1899: pg. 4, col. 1.
