Looking up the Merced Canyon highway grade from a point just above Briceburg. This view shows the characteristic appearance of the lower portion of the route where fires have been most severe and planting to relieve the severity of the steep barren slopes is most needed. Trees planted here will need cultivation and irrigation during the first two years because of the excessive heat and drought. Hillside in the background was burned over during 1924. Fire protection is of first importance along this road.
