Content/DescriptionHalf length portrait of an elderly woman wearing a white lace bonnet and a black lace shawl and collar, seated in a decorative chair. A brooch at her neck bears the years 1822-1872. Lucy Damaris (Howe) Bancroft (1799-1882) was the mother of Hubert Howe Bancroft and wife of Azariah Ashley Bancroft, whose portrait is the companion piece to this one. The portraits were possibly made in commemoration of the celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1872 (see xCS71.B2).
