Description

This is a story of how the life of refugees continues through the generations. Although Lara feels she is an American, she now faces the discrimination of being an Iraqi refugee through her association with her relatives who have recently arrived in her community. Lara Talib is 16 years old. She was born on the border of Iraq and Iran when her family were escaping Iraq during the Iraq/Kuwait war. She has been in America all her life and sounds and acts like a typical American teenager. Lara is just finding herself meeting newly arriving Iraqi teenagers. She seems to be finding her identity too. She told us she never thought much about being Iraqi until now. She thinks she has had some influence on helping some understand how important high school is, and why they should do their homework, and at the same time she is learning about why they are more comfortable sticking close to their families and not going out much. Lara has experienced some discrimination towards her. Some think she is Mexican or Indian. But, Lara seems unfazed. She says other nationalities had to go through this and it is just Iraqis time to go through it.
