Description

Solar neutrinos provide a unique opportunity to study neutrino physics and the nuclear reactions that produce the Sun’s energy. Borexino is a 300-ton liquid scintillator detector that is attempting to measure the full energy spectrum of solar neutrinos. Operations began in 2007 with a measurement of 7Be neutrinos, followed by measurements of pep and 8B neutrinos. The most recent result is a measurement of pp neutrinos that are produced in the primary reaction p + p → d + e⁺ + νₑ. Experimental methods that made these results possible will be described together with currents results and ongoing research toward lower background for a possible measurement of CNO neutrinos.
