Title
Citadel and moat, Imperial Precincts, Hue, Thua Thien-Hue Province
Variant Title
The first Lord of the Nguyen clan established a citadel at Hue in the 1500s. In 1805, Nguyen Anh reunited Vietnam by conquering the strong Trinh Lords of the north. He then fortified Hue as his new imperial capital, basing the citadel's designs on those of the 17th century French fortification architect, Sébastien Vauban. Hue remained the home of the imperial court until the last Nguyen emperor, Bao Dai, abdicated to the nationalist Viet Minh in 1945.
