Title
Redwood Utilization Study. Tree #1243. A very large hollow goose pen. The diameter on top of a 5 foot stump is 138 inches; the diameter at the top of the hole, or 24 feet higher above the stump, is only 91 inches, giving the butt of the tree a bottle shape. The shell varies from 12 to 36 inches in thickness, averaging about 20 inches, and the growth rings are for the most part very wide, some of them 3 to the inch. Apparently as each fire burned out some of the supporting wood, the tree was called upon to grow additional wood very rapidly to support it. This rapid growth took palce only at the butt and tapered off very quickly in the first 24 feet. Standing on the stump is Stan Yusk. E. F. Sept. 23, 1928.
