Description
Handwritten letter from Panama during a prospective miner's journey to California to his father. Belcher writes that he decided to leave New York because "the gold fever has taken me," and if the gold news he has heard is "1/4 part what they are represented to be they will exceed my expectations." He traveled from New York on the SS Falcon, and is joining the SS California for the final leg of the journey, the latter being one of the first steamships to arrive in San Francisco.
