Description
Handwritten letter from a California gold miner to his brother. Answering his brother's questions about returning home to work in an iron mine, Matthew writes that the offer is "flattering but I think my chance of making a big pile is better than yours but make all you can and I will do the same here." He also writes that it is not a good time to be traveling across Panama calling it "the sickly season" and recalls his own difficult journey to California. "There is only one season to cross and that is April and May."
