Description
Handwritten letter from a gold miner working 60 miles north of Sacramento describing the ordeal of crossing the plains to California, the large loss of livestock he witnessed all along the way, and his gold mining work. Postmarked from Culloma, Alta California (i.e. Columa, California). Letter and postmark show the month and day only, September 27, but was likely written in 1850 due to a reference in the letter about news of the recent death of General Zachary Taylor. Includes a typescript transcription.
