Description
Handwritten letter from a man journeying overland by wagon train to the gold fields in California. Contains details of the train's progress and describes a difficult journey, at times, with widespread sickness, river crossings, and witnessing large numbers of sick and dying people all along the trail. Also includes the original mailing envelope postmarked from Fort Leavenworth, Missouri on July 17 and addressed to Mrs. Matilda J.[?] C. Ellis, Alexandria, Clark County, Missouri.
