The Bancroft Library

The Emily Bourne was orginally constructed in New Bedford, Massachusetts and rigged as a schooner. The Emily Bourne Company, a mining company formed by Horatio S. Rotch of New Bedford and Robert S. Almy of Boston, purchased the vessel and re-rigged it as a brig. William R. Potter led numerous voyages out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, mostly whalers between the late 1830s to 1860s, including the ship China, the ship Illinois, and the Emily Bourne.
