Description
Bound journal containing dated, handwritten entries of a man traveling from Maine to San Francisco and the Sandwich Islands [i.e. Hawaii] aboard the ship Quoddy Belle with Captain [Enoch S.] Fowler. Divided into two major sections and a summary section, possibly made at a later date. The first section, from Eastport, Maine to San Francisco, covers the period from Nov. 27, 1849 to June 3, 1850. The second section, from San Francisco to the Sandwich Islands, covers the period from Nov. 25, 1850 to Dec. 14, 1850. A third smaller section contains 8 entries dated from June 6 to August 13 that appear to be recollected summaries made at some later date. Also contains entries from Rio [de Janeiro, Brazil?] and Callou, Peru. Mack was a businessman of some means enabling him to live and travel in San Francisco, the gold fields, and Hawaii without the necessity of finding work. Entries mostly refer to particulars aboard ship and observations made while onshore in San Francisco and Hawaii including searching for gold, gold mining and miners, opening a business in Honolulu, and visiting Hawaii Island via the Brig Eagle to see the volcano.
