Description

Written by an unidentified man from Philadelphia, possibly a manager at a local shipyard, containing handwritten entries for each day of the year plus 4 pages of recollections concerning his trip to San Francisco via Panama. Most of the daily entries are from Philadelphia and include weather observations and the amount of money he spent each day. On Friday, October 19, he writes of purchasing passage to San Francisco for $150. On November 11, he leaves home to begin his journey departing the next day from New York aboard the steamship, Crescent City, and arriving in Chagres, Panama on November 22. From there, he pays for passage across Panama by canoe, arriving on the west coast in about a week, departs Panama aboard the steamship California on December 6, and arrives in San Francisco on December 29. The last two entries find him and his friend Sam walking around town and being offered work at $16 dollars a day. The four pages of recollections cover Panama, San Blas and Acapulco, Mexico, and San Diego, California.
