Bound travel diary of L.E. Shurtleff, traveling from upstate New York to the gold regions of California via Panama containing 77 pages of handwritten, dated entries. Shurtleff and a traveling companion, E.L. Sanderson, board the ship, Empire City, in New York City on November 30, 1849, arrive at Chagres, Panama on December 11, cross the isthmus of Panama and continue to San Francisco aboard the ship, Norman, arriving on February 21, 1850. The entries contain details of the voyage, descriptions of Panama towns, people, and customs, and various incidents along the way. Also includes six receipts of Shurtleff's that had been stored in the back pocket of the diary, and a typescript of selected excerpts from the diary.
