Description

Volume by Cunningham concerning his travels from New York to California and life in Chile from Sept. 12, 1852 to Aug. 3, 1854. He provides a detailed account of his voyage via Cape Horn, Sept. 13, 1852-Mar. 12, 1853, including weather conditions, a list of crew and officers, ship activities, and geographical sites. He arrives in San Francisco and visits sites of the city (including gambling halls, Chinatown, and ships recently arrived to the city), contacts old acquaintances from Boston, and seeks work as an engineer. Employment, mining, and business ventures take him to other Calif. cities, such as Sacramento, Shasta, and Colusa. Finally, Cunningham sails to Valparaiso, Chile, on the clipper-ship Spray, lands a job as a surveyor, and travels throughout the country. Portfolio includes several loose items from journal.
