A day by day narrative of life on board the Merrill, bound for the gold rush with George E. Kellum, Master. Details names, ages, place of origin, and character traits of all the passengers on board, many of whom were Irish immigrants leaving Boston for the California gold fields. Describes stops in Rio de Janerio and Valpariaso, Chile, as well as deaths and burial at sea, drunken brawls between passengers and crew, a celebration after crossing the equator, and their arrival in San Francisco.
