Description

Bound personal journal of a sea captain containing dated entries for two ship voyages he captained, one for the ship Audubon and the other for the ship Gertrude. The Audobon voyage (November 20, 1850 to March 6, 1852) included a leg from New York to San Francisco around Cape Horn, carrying primarily women and children passengers going to the gold rush. From there the Audubon sailed to Manila and New Bedford, Connecticut. The voyage on the Gertrude (August 3, 1852 to April 2, 1854) sailed from New York to Canton, Calcutta, Macao, Singapore, and New Bedford, Connecticut. Interspersed throughout the entries are 28 finely rendered pen-and-ink and watercolor paintings of ships sighted and several landfalls.
