Description
Journal of an unknown passenger aboard the ship Capitol documenting a voyage from Boston to San Francisco via Cape Horn during the California gold rush. Handwritten, dated entries provide detailed descriptions of conditions and daily life aboard the ship including confrontations with the captain, Thorndike Procter, over the state of rations, raucous dance parties, treatment of stowaways, descriptions of fish and birds encountered, etc. Several song lyrics included in the text are attributed to another passenger, likely Benjamin Franklin Whittemore. Also contains 9 finely rendered pencil drawings by fellow passenger Chester Cooley Hosmer, depicting various features and events encountered including the ports of Rio de Janeiro and Valparaíso, the ship Capitol leaving Boston and during a storm at sea, the shoreline of "Staten Island" (that is, Isla de los Estados, Argentina) and Cape Horn, the Brig Mary Stewart and the William C. Hackstaff pilot boat, and an albatross at rest. The last three pages of the journal is a 14 verse song titled, "A Song dedicated to the Officers of the Ship Capitol," recounting the ship's exploits and hopes for finding gold, signed "By W.T. old friend" [likely passenger William.T. Hubbard].
