Case file for United States vs. W. E. P. Hartnell, Alisal (also called "Patrocinio") [Monterey County]. Includes transcript of the proceedings and related documents.
Granted (1) by Figueroa Dec. 19, 1833, and June 26, 1834, for ⅔ league, and (2) by Alvarado may 8, 1839, an augmentation of only a few acres but sufficiently large to affect the area of ⅔ leagues of the whole grant; both grants to W.E.P. Hartnell. Claim filed by W.E.P. Hartnell June 10, 1852. Confirmed by the Board Oct. 31, 1854. Confirmed by the District Court Oct. 3, 1855, and Dec. 9, 1865; an order for the decree to issue was made, but the decree is lost. Patent issued to Maria Teresa de la Guerra de Hartnell Feb. 15, 1882, for 2,971.26 acres. The patent is recorded in Salinas, Monterey County, but without a plat. The original patent was in the iron safe and so survived the 1906 San Francisco fire. It is at present in the National Archives in Washington. No. 267 General Land Office map. In this claim Hartnell also claimed the above rancho; the Board Omitted to pass on this part of the claim, but the District Court rejected it as land purchased by Hartnell. Bowman, J.N.
