Title
Bed to test survival of Engelmann Spruce on different seed beds. Foreground, ashes; middle, bare mineral soil; background, duff. 4,000 seed sown in each space, November 7, 1920. Growth best in ashes. Survival best in mineral soil. Germination was excellent in duff, but drying out of surface in summer killed the seedlings, only 3 remain. Natural reproduction of Hemlock, Grand Fir and Cedar also good in ashes and soil, poor on duff.
