Title
View across one of the bottomland swales in the planting area of the Nebraska National Forest. The almost complete failure of planted trees in the lowland areas is attributed to greater competition from grass. The best soil is found here as it has washed down from the higher parts and the growth of grass is much more luxurious. They are no longer putting out trees on these bottoms. The tree in right foreground is a western yellow pine much stunted from attacks from the pine shoot moth.
