Farm and Forest along the way near Old Fort North Carolina. Some of the farms are so steep that the fields are cultivated with difficulty. At Old Fort is a large Chestnut wood extract plant and tannery of the Union Tanning Company. Chestnut wood is worth about $6.00 per cord at the plant for extract. They produce belting leather exclusively and use extract of Chestnut Oak bark, Quebracho and S. American nut besides Chestnut.
