Title
Timber stands on the floor of Yosemite Valley present an interesting illustration of the effects of fire protection. An early survey map of the valley in the museum shows that the open meadow areas amounted to nearly 800 acres about 60 years ago. Since that time the meadow has decreased to about half that area, its place being taken by thrifty young stands of Western Yellow Pine and Incense Cedar. A number of borings in these trees show them to be 60-65 years of age. An old veteran Yellow Pine seed tree and the dense young, even aged second-growth at Camp-ground 11 are shown here.
