Title
California Nutmeg (Torreya californica). Germinating seed of 1921 crop after having been stratified in soil from December 16, 1921, to October 5, 1922 when they were sown in seed beds. Photographed March 8, 1923 nearly 15 months after having been first placed in the soil. Note the position of the shoot with respect to the cotyledons; also in the cut seed, the presence of bright green chlorophyll within the endosperm while the portion of the shoot below ground is still colorless.
