Title
Phoenix dactylifera - the oldest in California. Tablet on the tree: " Serra Palm. Planted 1769. Burial place of more than 60 victims of scurvy. Meeting place July 1, 1769, of the four divisions of this Expedition - the leaders being Governor Gaspar de Portola, Captain Fernando Rivera y Marcada, Captain Vincente Vila of the "San Carlos," Captain Juan Perez of the "San Antonio" and Father Junipero Serra, President of the California Missions. Here began "El Camino Real," first trodden by white men when Governor Portola sat out for Monterey, July 14, 1769."
