Title
Second Growth Redwood Cutting Experiment Project #688, Big River, Mendocino County, California. A trestle on the Mendocino Lumber Company's railroad supported on second growth piles and caps. The stringers and ties are old growth redwood. This railroad was built in 1911 and only this year (1923) began to show necessity for repair. The second growth caps are still in good condition, but the bottoms of the piles have all of the sap wood rotted off, with a few cases of heartwood rotting also. In most cases, however, the heartwood is still sound. E. Fritz, May 1923.
